Suggestions |

|
From past years competitor Todd Coyour here are some very important tips and suggestions for the race.

1. Bring flannel-backed tablecloths to cover all of your support vehicle floors and seats. This prevents the floor from getting wet/dirty and the seat from getting disgusting from sweat. 2. Whatever lengths you choose for your legs, shorten them up as you go. We usually time ourselves and when we get too slow, we shorten the leg. 3. Switch on the canoe every chance you get. You need to leave before they start if you are going to get to the first switching point. 4. GET CREATIVE FOR THE PARADE. We have done poems, cheers, songs, and short skits in the past. It makes the parade more interesting for the fans and the athletes. 5. Hand out candy at the parade. It is not very expensive to buy a bag or two of suckers/hard candy. The kids really enjoy it. Don’t buy chocolate – it melts in the July heat. 6. Go to the canoe racing classes at the U of M on Monday nights. They are free. Contact me for information on this: tcoyou1@isd77.k12.mn.us We cut 90 minutes off of our canoe time by going just 5 times. 7. If you take a van, take out the middle two seats if you can. It gives you more room to get in, out, and around the van. It also helps to have a place to stretch. 8. Get to know the other teams. There are no jerks in the field. Everyone is competitive but not at the cost of being classy. Teams want to beat each other very badly, but I’ve never passed or been passed by a team and not talked with them. 9. Have fun! I’ve been on teams that have placed as high as 2nd and as low as 28th. In both cases, the memories the most meaningful memory to me was the finisher plaque. If you are in this for the “prize” then this is not for you. If you have any questions, contact me at tcoyou1@isd77.k12.mn.us
